I am a licensed psychologist in Colorado and New Jersey and a licensed addictions counselor. I got my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Rockies in 2009, my masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the Colorado School of Professional Psychology in 2007 and my Bachelors degree in 1988 from Harvard College. I have extensive experience working with complex trauma and dissociative disorders with a specialty in DID. I tailor my work so that each individual client feels seen, heard and accepted. My work is relaxed, person-centered, and mindfulness based. I am trained in and use a variety of methods including EMDR and elements of IFS. In addition to my private practice, I am a part time Staff Psychologist at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center. Before becoming a therapist, I was a journalist in the magazine world and still write an occasional piece for publication.
I have been teaching yoga for over a decade and would love to have you join me at 12:00 on Wednesdays for a free hour of mindful vinyasa at the Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Colorado Springs. Prerecorded classes are on the Dr. Debby Patz YouTube channel.
I approach substance misuse and process addictions from a harm reduction perspective. I have presented on harm reduction at both regional and national conferences, including the Psychotherapy Associates Winter Symposium and the Colorado/Wyoming College Counseling Center Conference. My work exploring the intersection of embodiment, yoga, and psychotherapy has been featured in The Addictions Newsletter, Prevention Magazine, Redbook, KRDO radio, and the Colorado Springs Gazette. I continue to deepen my expertise in these areas, with a growing focus on the treatment of gambling addiction and related behavioral concerns.
On a personal note, I have been practicing yoga since 1991 and began practicing mindfulness meditation shortly thereafter. I love to run, bike, hike, garden, and be outdoors in general. I have completed over 25 marathons, two ultramarathons, a half Ironman distance duathlon and have guided disabled runners in marathon and half marathon distance races. Many years ago I rode my bicycle across the United States. I love traveling and have been fortunate to visit Israel, India, Nepal, Southeast Asia, Mexico, Canada, Europe and Africa. I am a proud mother of two adult daughters, a voracious reader, devoted fan of the public library and an active volunteer in my community. I live in Colorado Springs with my husband, two cats and one dog.
