I am a licensed psychologist in the State of Colorado and a licensed addictions counselor. I got my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Rockies in 2009, my masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the Colorado School of Professional Psychology in 2007 and my Bachelors degree in 1988 from Harvard College. I have extensive experience working with complex trauma and dissociative disorders (including DID). I tailor my work so that each individual client feels seen, heard and accepted. My work is relaxed, person-centered, and mindfulness based. I am trained in and use a variety of methods including EMDR and elements of IFS. In addition to my private practice, I am a part time Staff Psychologist at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center. Before becoming a therapist, I was a journalist in the magazine world and still write an occasional piece for publication.
I teach yoga on a weekly basis! I trained at intensive trainings with Baron Baptiste, completed my 200 hour certification at CorePower Yoga and am level 1 trained in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy; I am a registered experienced teacher with Yoga Alliance. I'd love to have you join me at 12:00 on Wednesdays for a free hour of mindful vinyasa at the Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Colorado Springs. Prerecorded classes are on the Dr Debby Patz Facebook page or the Dr. Debby Patz YouTube channel.
When working with substance misuse or process addictions, I come from a harm reduction perspective. I presented on the effectiveness of harm reduction to treat substance misuse at the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Psychotherapy Associates Winter Symposium and at the 2018 and 2019 Colorado/Wyoming College Counseling Center Conference. I presented the findings of her research in yoga therapy at the IAYT's Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research in 2009 and at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association's annual convention in 2010. I co-presented on yoga, therapy and embodiment at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Humanistic Counseling and Psychological Association Conference. My work was featured in the spring 2012 edition of The Addictions Newsletter, the February 2010 issue of Prevention Magazine, on KRDO radio, in the September 30, 2010 Colorado Springs Gazette and the November 2009 issue of Redbook Magazine.
On a personal note, I have been practicing yoga since 1991 and began practicing mindfulness meditation shortly thereafter. I have completed over 25 marathons, two ultramarathons and a half Ironman distance duathlon and have guided disabled runners in marathon and half marathon distance races. Many years ago I rode my bicycle across the United States and have recently returned to long distance cycling (but not that long!). I love traveling and have been fortunate to visit India, Nepal, Israel, Southeast Asia, Europe and Africa. I am a proud mother of two adult daughters, a voracious reader and an active volunteer in my community. I live in Colorado Springs with my husband, two cats and one dog.
